In August of 2021, a small group of community groups and local organizers signed the lease for a 4500-square-foot multi-use facility located in Historic Filipinotown. This group felt the need to connect and share space after two years of disconnection through the pandemic. Quickly after starting this project, it was proven that this is a need felt throughout the community.

People’s City Council, Polo’s Pantry, and Lens Co all work collaboratively in the community towards housing justice, food justice, and abolition. Members of the organizations came together to build out a space that could be used for meetings, teach-ins, workshops, direct action preparation, and more. The Robinson School for Public Awareness and Community Engagement (SPACE)’s mission has always been to build community by providing an accessible place where people can come together and work towards a transformative Los Angeles.

Vital work that would otherwise not be a part of our city’s fabric is fostered here, whether that is helping traditionally marginalized groups such as the unhoused or people who are fighting for the abolition of the police. To date, dozens of organizations have used the space to grow and deepen their community. We estimate that thousands of unique people have come through the Robinson SPACE doors since we opened.

The Robinson SPACE aims to build an equitable Los Angeles by providing a direct resource as well as programming that aligns with anti-white supremacist and abolitionist values.
